Northern Symphonic Winds was created with the ensemble concept introduced by internationally recognized conductor Fredric Fennell. Fennell’s concept that outstanding performers in small numbers can make incredible music is what Northern Symphonic Winds is all about.
Gary Stutzman, former director of bands for Charlevoix Public Schools and Northwest Academy, aspired to create an ensemble in Northern Michigan.
“I have always felt like it would be good for collegiate level players from our area to have a group to play in.”
Many times, area Community Bands include large numbers of performers from all different levels and the music is generally programed so all members can perform the music. The expectations are much higher for members of Northern Symphonic Winds and performers are challenged at a much higher level.
A great part of their success as a group is Dr. Tim Topolewski, who has his Doctrine in conducting. His directing skills bring a special touch to the ensemble and inspires a great deal from the group.
Together, Dr. Topolewski and the NSW musicians, confirm Fennell’s concept that outstanding performers in small numbers can make incredible music!
